Fibroids And Fertility- Fibroids and Pregnancy

It’s bad enough to be diagnosed with fibroids at any time, but if you are yet to complete your family, or haven’t even had your first child, then the news that you have fibroids can be devastating.  However, the news might not be as bad as you first think.  Dealing with fibroids when pregnant is not always as difficult as you might first think and many ladies will conceive naturally and their pregnacies will proceed unhindered.

However, when you are the one affected, this can be a very worrying time indeed.  The last thing you need when contemplating becoming pregnany is stress, as that in itself can inhibit fertility by disrupting your hormonal levels.

Fibroids During Pregnancy can cause specific problems such as implantation problems as the womb can alter in shape and those fibroids which protrude inside the uterus can lead to fertility problems and can cause miscarriages.  In addition, the location  of fibroids is important.  If you have fibroids which are located at the entrance of the womb or the fallopian tubes, this can cause blockages and prevent the normal passage of sperm.

Planning Ahead

If you have fibroids now but not considering starting a family for a few months or more, now is the time to consider your options and take action.  If it can be avoided, it is best not to start trying for a family when you have fibroids as their growth can be unpredictable during pregnancy and although everything could well be fine, it is preferable not to have fibroids.

Give Yourself Plenty Of Time

In terms of conventional treatment for fibroids, embolization is an option to consider.  In this procedure, tiny plastic particles are injected into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids causing them to shrink. This is possibly the least invasive conventional treatment and although not always permanent, it can cause sufficient shrinkage for conception and a safe pregnancy.

You do need to think about timing.  The recovery period is around 6 months and during this period, it is not advisable to try for a baby. The other option is to try natural treatment to shrink fibroids and although this does take time, effort and motivation, there are no unpleasant side effects and the results can be permanent.  Of course, the desire to become pregnant is usually the motivation that most women need and they do find that the dietary and lifestyle changes involved are simple to follow and not too difficult to adhere to.

Are You Already Pregnant?

If you know you have fibroids and you are already pregnant, then don’t despair. Conception is one of the biggest hurdles faced by women with fibroids by overcoming this issue, you have come a long way already. Make sure that you speak to your doctor about the situation and arrange for regular monitoring and plan your delivery options beforehand, particularly if your fibroids are located in the lower part of your uterus.

Red Degeneration

This is a less common problem faced by some women who are pregnant with fibroids.  This condition occurs when your fibroids enlarge during pregnancy and the blood supply to them becomes insufficient to sustain their new-found size.  This usually happens during the second trimester and causes the fibroid to bleed.  Although it can be painful and quite frightening, it is rarely dangerous and the pregnancy will usually be unaffected.  However, you should always speak to your doctor if you suspect red degeneration.

Taking pre-emptive action to shrink your fibroids before pregnancy is always the best option, but remember that most women will be fine despite having fibroids when pregnant. Make sure that you have regular check up so that any problems can be quickly addressed and always consult your doctor if you have any worrying symptoms.
