Contraception Options to Prevent Pregnancy

There are natural contraceptives, like withdrawal and the rhythm method, hormonal methods like birth control pills and shots, and barrier methods such as condoms, diaphragms, and contraceptive sponges.  Finding out as much as you can about each of these is a great way to make the right choice for you.  As far as birth control your doctor might prescribe or recommend (which tends to be the most effective route to take) there are a great many choices that should be discussed.  Your doctor will be able to help you make the decision that is right for your body. 

Barrier methods work by blocking the sperm from entering the uterus.  They must be inserted or used each time you are going to have intercourse, which can make them inconvenient.  Certain methods employ a device or substance to be inserted into the woman’s body, which can also increase her risk of urinary tract infections, and also makes them a less desirable choice for some.  Another common type of barrier birth control is the condom.  Condoms are a popular choice because they are inexpensive, widely available, and they offer the most protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Other common contraceptives aside from natural contraceptives are the birth control pill and vaginal rings.  These options are more convenient than barrier methods and are therefore more commonly used.  The most important thing to consider when making the decision about birth control is which method is going to work best for you.  From abstaining to the many other options, enlisting the help of a doctor is a good way to make the right choice.
